Hair Loss Medications

If you suffer from hair loss, chances are you have already experimented with shampoos, ointments or supplements all promising to stimulate the growth of thick, healthy hair. Unfortunately the majority of these products are simply a business ploy offering unattainable results, but all hope is not lost. The only two FDA approved medications available for hair loss, Rogaine and Propecia, have actually proven to be effective with the right patient.Save your money and time by sticking with these two doctor recommended medications.

Propecia (Finasteride) for hair replacement

Through several years of evidence, Propecia has proven to be effective in treating male pattern baldness. FDA approved Propecia is an oral medication available only by a doctor's prescription. It is most beneficial for men with mild to moderate hair loss and is not intended for female consumption. Less effective at the frontal hairline, Propecia works best in treating baldness at the crown of the head. Propecia (finasteride) works by inhibiting DHT, the main metabolite of the human body that is responsible for hair loss, and is particularly effective in reversing early, genetic baldness. For optimal results, Propecia is often used in conjunction with hair transplants or Rogaine (Minoxidil) .

Rogaine (Minoxidil) for hair restoration

Available over the counter, Rogaine is a topical solution used to stimulate hair growth in men and women. In fact, it is the only FDA approved medication for treating hair loss in women. After decades of use, it is safe to say that Rogaine is fairly effective. When used as directed, two percent solution Rogaine has demonstrated hair growth in 30 percent of male patients with females demonstrating an even better response. The more recently released five percent solution has proven to be more effective than the original formula. Either with the two percent or five percent solution, Rogaine is only ideal for treating new hair loss in small areas. Although Rogaine has proven to stimulate hair growth in some cases, it is most effective when combined with Propecia or hair transplants.

Medications in conjunction with Hair Transplants

It is important for patients to realize that medications work only to thicken hair in thinning areas or halt further hair loss. Medications cannot grow hair once it is entirely lost. This is where hair transplant surgery is more beneficial than Rogain and Propecia. Unlike medication, hair transplant surgery can replace hair once it is lost but does nothing to prevent actual hair loss. For advanced balding, medication in conjunction with hair transplantation is the most effective means of treatment.

During your complimentary consultation, Dr. White can help determine what medicine or combinations of medicines are best for your unique case. For most, the best results are achieved with a combination of medication and hair transplant procedures.
